Aizawl: The ongoing efforts of security forces in Mizoram have led to the seizure of a substantial quantity of drugs, arms, and even exotic animals. Recently, authorities confiscated approximately 17.946 kg of methamphetamine tablets, valued at over Rs 54 crore, in the northeastern state, as reported on Sunday.
A Myanmar national involved in drug trafficking was arrested during this operation.
According to a defense spokesperson, the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with the Mizoram police, executed a well-coordinated operation on Saturday night based on confidential intelligence. This led to the recovery of nearly 1,80,000 methamphetamine tablets in Siachangkawn, located in Lawngtlai district, which borders Bangladesh.
The estimated value of the seized drugs is around Rs 54 crore.
The detained Myanmar citizen and the confiscated narcotics are being transferred to the Bualpui Police outpost in Lawngtlai district for further legal action.
This operation underscores the Assam Rifles' steadfast dedication to tackling drug trafficking in the region and protecting the youth from the dangers of narcotics, as stated by officials.
A senior police official from Mizoram noted that these methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as Yaba or party tablets, were smuggled from Myanmar with the intent to distribute them in Bangladesh via secret routes.
During a recent event in Aizawl, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed serious concerns regarding the escalating drug abuse problem in the state.
He called upon all citizens to unite in the fight for a drug-free Mizoram.
The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of enhancing both legal frameworks and traditional approaches to combat drug trafficking.
He particularly pointed out the effectiveness of community-based social sanctions, rooted in Mizo culture, as a significant weapon against drug abuse, often proving more impactful than formal laws.
Myanmar's Chin state serves as a major hub for the smuggling of various drugs, exotic wildlife, and other contraband through six districts in Mizoram: Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
Mizoram shares an unfenced border of 510 km with Myanmar and 318 km with Bangladesh.
